Ja’Bria Barber, MM, MT-BC, NICU-MT is the owner and board certified music therapist at Vine & Branch Music Therapy, a private music therapy practice located in Gastonia, North Carolina. Barber received her bachelors degree in Vocal Performance from the University of South Carolina, her masters degree in Music Therapy from Florida State University, and is currently pursuing her doctorate in Educational Psychology from North Carolina State University. As a clinician, Barber specializes in using music to develop marginalized students’ critical literacy skills by exposing them to music and musical texts that reflect diverse cultural images and history. Her experience working in marginalized communities have fueled her desire to promote students’ self and community empowerment skills, as well as their involvement with social action and civic engagement. Furthermore, her scope of practice includes advocating for spaces to employ various forms of culturally relevant pedagogy in traditional classroom environments.
